Sumela Monastery is the oldest monastery in the region built on a steep cliff which is in the vicinity of Maçka, a borough of Trabzon. Also known as "Meryem Ana" or "the Virgin Mary".it is erected around 386s, during the reign of the Emperor Theodosius I. According to a myth, two Athenian priests, Barnabas and Sophronius, found the icon of the Virgin Mary in a cave of the mountain and built the Sumela Monastery there. Monastery was ruined and restored many times in the history. In the Ottoman era, Sumela Monastery was listed as a protected site upon Sultan's command, but it was abandoned and badly damaged during the War of Independence. It is one of the most visited places in the Black Sea area.

On the way to the Monastery the group will stop at a restaurant where they will be served local dishes to complete the atmosphere.
